bioplastics

Bioplastics are derived entirely or almost entirely from renewable raw materials. They are composed of three basic parts: polymers, plasticizers and additives, and each of these can come as a single element or a combination of ingredients.

Polymers give the plastic its strength and for this project we experimented with agar agar, gelatin, chitosan and gum arabica. Plasticizers give it its bendable and mouldable qualities and we used glycerin, but decided to look for alternatives as honey, avocado oil, olive oil and maple syrup. The additives we chose come from either our waste or from our kitchen and they each have a story.
